e PAN card: Everything you need to know

PAN is one of the most critical documents which every individual must have to make any significant financial transactions and activities. Recently Income Tax department introduced the e PAN. e PAN means ‘Electronic PAN’. e PAN card is a valid document for all practical purposes and is accepted as a valid proof/ valid document all over India. e PAN has a QR code which contains all demographic details of the applicant. These details can be accessed through a QR code reader.

Who can apply for e PAN?

To apply for a e PAN you must be

  • An Indian resident
  • An individual taxpayer
  • Must be a first time applicant or you should be applying for changes to an existing PAN card
  • Must have an Aadhar card
  • Must have an active phone number linked to the Aadhar card
  • Aadhar must be updated and should have correct details.

e PAN application can be made through NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL.

e-PAN

I. Apply for e PAN on NSDL (Protean)

  • Visit the NSDL website.
  • The application type will be New PAN – Indian citizen and category will be ‘Individual’. Please provide all details as per Aadhar card.
  • Enter the remaining details and click on submit.
  • On the next page there will be a question ‘How do you want to submit your PAN application documents?’. Select the option ‘Submit digitally through e-KYC and e-Sign’.
  • On the same page there is one more question ‘Whether physical PAN card is required?’. Select the option ‘No’. The e-PAN will be sent to the applicant’s email address.
  • Once Aadhar authentication is done an OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked to the Aadhar card to generate Aadhar based e-Sign. With this e-KYC is complete. Then pay the required fees.
  • You will receive a acknowledgement number on your email ID or mobile number mentioned on your application. Once the e-PAN is allotted, you will receive it directly on your email given in the application.

II. Apply for e PAN on UTIITSL

  • Visit the UTIITSL PAN portal.
  • Click on PAN card for Indian Citizen in PAN services.
  • Click on apply for new PAN card (Form 49A)
  • Select the option ‘Digital Mode’ and ‘Aadhar based eKYC option’ in the form 49A
  • Select ‘Individual’ in Status of applicant dropdown
  • Select ‘e PAN only. No physical PAN card will be dispatched’ in the PAN card mode section. Click submit.
  • Please provide all details as per Aadhar card.
  • The Aadhaar number is verified by UTIITSL immediately. Check the acknowledgement box and click on submit. It is mandatory to submit Aadhaar as ID proof.
  • Attach scanned copies of the documents. You will receive an acknowledgement number on your mail ID or mobile number, mentioned in your application.
  • The e PAN will be sent to the applicant’s email ID.
